Amazing Maruyama Okyo

I went to "Maruyama Okyo: Opening up New terrain in Japanese Painting" @ Nezu Museum this December.
I was so horrified by one of his representative works, Sichinan-Sichifuku-Zu (the 7 misfortunes and 7 fortunes); 7 misfortunes especially, which are terrible & cruel execution scenes drawn by him.  I think a traditional Japanese paining is basically flat and still image using pale colors, cut out of consecutive motions.  So each of his motionless 2-dimensional drawing with details makes the moment much more silently brutal and definitely should be amazing masterpiece by itself.
He must have watched the executions and sketched them actually.
I should have walked the beautiful garden of the museum after that to forget the nightmare...
It is a wide traditional Japanese garden with difference in height scenery worth visiting.

Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–95) brought about a revolution in the history of Japanese painting through a new style based in realistic sketching from nature. Underlying this realist painting is a level of technical achievement that is at once both transcendent and highly diverse.
