仏像でナイト第２回・第３回に出席して、知りたかったことがだんだんわかってきました。
それは、神道の他に仏教が広がっていった理由。
（まあ、日本人の性格からして海外のものを受け入れるのは古代から得意だったのだろうけれど。）
お寺のご住職さんから、歴史上の史実だけでなく当時の世界情勢や政治のこと、当時の日本人の暮らしのお話をお聞きするのは、学校で習う歴史より何倍も深いのでした。
曰く、当時の朝鮮半島の国々の間では勢力争いがあり、日本を味方にすべく、いろいろな贈り物が日本に届けられ、そのうちのひとつが百済からもたらされた遠いインドから渡ってきた「仏教」であったと。
「こんな良いものがありますよ」と言われて受け取ったもののひとつが「仏教」だったのですね(538年)。
今の日本よりよっぽど外交上手な当時の日本は、如才なく全ての国から贈り物をもらって偏りなくお付き合いしていたそう。
飢饉、流行病や天変地異が起きていた時代、日本の豪族達も勢力争いに明け暮れていた時代において、
「戦勝祈願」「呪い殺す」「呪詛返し」などの現世でご利益あるとされるアグレッシブな仏教に当時の実力者が惹かれていき、お寺や仏像を作っていったそうなのです。
なので、最初の頃は、仏教は民衆のものではなく、一部の実力者、天皇家や貴族のものでしかなかったのですね。
それが、聖武天皇が743年に東大寺「大仏造顕の詔」を発し、仏法の力でより良い世になるよう広く民衆に大仏造立の助けを求めるに至るまでになったわけです。
歴史が進むにつれ、いろいろな宗派の仏教が発展していくのは我々が知っている通り。
戦時中の軍国主義に神道が利用されたこともあって、
神道の方がラジカルなイメージが海外には強いと思うけど、神道には布教活動をしないし、宗教上の争いもしない。
布教活動をしなかったのに、どうしてこんなに神社が・・・？ 不思議。
今でもたくさん見かける鳥居の数が教えてくれるように、神社がこんなに多く日本に存在しているのは、
やっぱり日本人の日々の暮らしに元々根付いているからなのでしょうね。
あと、尊い神様は、仏教であれ、神道であれ大切にしてきたのだと思います。
As I joined 2nd & 3rd workshops “night of Buddha Statue “, I am getting to understand what I want to know how Buddhism was spreading in Japan along with Shintoism. – I suppose our ancestors were also flexible to accept something from abroad.
The chief priest explains us more deeply about the history & how people lived, judging from the global situation & political climate at that time.
He said Buddhism was just one of the gifts from countries in the Korean Peninsula because each of them struggled for power and tried to make an alley of Japan.
Japan was handling foreign diplomacy better than now – received the gifts from each country and acted cleverly and they said Buddhism came from Paekche in 538.
In the time of famines, epidemic diseases, earth shocks and power struggles between local ruling families, they were attracted by aggressive power of Buddhism.
They believed it was effective for “prayer for victory”, “cursing someone”, “protecting from cursing” & etc. and they made temples and Buddha statues.
So Buddhism was only for the Imperial and other rich & powerful families at first.
The Emperor Shomu started a national project to spread Buddhism to save Japan from many national crises such as famine and epidemics and in 743 he announced and asked people to help to build the Great Buddha at Todaiji.
Various Buddhism has developed all over Japan since then as we know.
I suppose Shintoism still gives radical impression to foreign people especially in Asia because Japanese militarism used Shinto for the world wars.
But Shinto basically had/has no missionary activities or religious battles.
Without any missionary activities, I am wondering how come we can see so many shrines in our country.
A lot of “Torii - shrine gate” tells us Shinto is an indigenous religion of Japan, close to people’s life from ancient times.
And Japanese people used to worship the precious gods either of Buddhism or Shintoism, I suppose.
*Temples are places to worship Buddha, and shrines are places to worship Shinto gods.
