下町ぶらぶら - Strolling in Down Towns

11/16は中学校からの仲良しの友人と、下町散策。
小春日和で、たんぽぽまで咲いてて、
ふたりともおみくじは「大吉」で、
寅さんが愛した天丼も草団子も美味しくて、
変わらないものがうれしくて、
でも、大人になってしまったことのさみしさも感じちゃった、一日。
日本人なら誰でも知ってる(？)寅さんの町、柴又をのんびり楽しんでから、
お寺の中にあるプラネタリウムを鑑賞。
笑いあり、涙ありの、とっておきの一日に。


☆寅さんシリーズ、実は、1本も通しで観たことがないのだ。
「そういえば、ふーてんって何なの？」と聞いたら
友人が優しく「まあ、ぷーたろーってことよ」って教えてくれた。
お、実際はテキ屋さんらしい？
すごいね、いつも恋しちゃってるんでしょ？寅さんって。ラテン系？
そう言えば、リチャード・ギアがフランス人的寅さんをCMで演じてて面白い。

☆帝釈天からもほど近い山本亭
こじんまりながら、オススメです。 米国の日本庭園専門誌「ジャーナル・オブ・ジャパニーズガーデニング」が実施した日本庭園ランキング調査で山本亭は、2004年〜2007年の４年連続で3位にランクされましたそうです。（そうなの？）

☆お寺”プラネターリアム”銀河座
結構つっこみどころ満載。 
設備、素晴らしいです。床暖房だし。本当、今年一番気持ち良かった。お昼寝が。
星の話より別のことしか記憶に残ってないかも。
そもそも星の話が、どうでも良いイタリア語とかで台無しのような。。。

I strolled around down towns in Tokyo with my best friend from junior high school.
It was the perfect day of an Indian summer, dandelions in blossoms, both of our written oracles said we would have the best of luck, enjoyed local yummy foods. - We had so much fun. It was a special day for us like we went back to being school girls. So happy, we still have the same friendship ever after while we felt the bitterness to know we are already grown up enough.

We enjoyed Shibamata, a famous for Tora-san’s home town then went to a planetarium in a temple.  Almost all of the Japanese must know about Tora-san, the chief character of good old Japanese movie series “Otoko wa tsurai yo”.

☆To tell the truth, I've never watch any of “Tora-san” movies thoroughly until the end roll.
So I am not pretty sure about what he is doing except wandering around the country but know he always falls in love with a lady. He must be passionate guy like the Latin.
Recently, Richard Gere acts a French Tora-san in TV commercial film of “Orangina” in Japan.

The Japanese beverage manufacturer has the concept there is the common point between “Tora-san” & “Orangina” as “national wide popularity”. - Orangina is national wide popular than Coke in France.

☆Yamamoto-Tei near Shibamata Taishakuten, Buddhist temples; good place to visit
In an American magazine "Journal of Japanese Gardening", Yamamoto-Tei was ranked as 3rd place for 4 years in a row from 2004 to 2007.  (...Really?)

☆Planetarium Theater Galaxy at a temple 
Yes, they have such fine facility with floor heating system. It is the best cozy little place I ever visited this year… truly the perfect place to have a nap.
We could not remember about the stars but only the navigators’ strange conversations in fragments during the show. One of the navigators is the chief priest of that temple and somehow disturbing the other navigator who tries her best to give us logical explanation about the stars. We are afraid he must be ultra‐Italianized person always trying to say something in Italian & he thinks it’s cool...

神道と仏教がある日本の風景 – Scenery of Buddhism & Shinto living in harmony in Japan

今年最後の仏像でナイト。ご住職、ハピネス観章さまのブータン旅行記から始まって、テーマの「東京の仏像」、1年間お話しされた仏像の歴史のラップアップで締めくくり。
ちなみに、東京でたくさんの素晴らしい仏像に会えるところ、それは、東京国立博物館だそうです！

明治政府の方針で始まった廃仏毀釈の折に、たくさんのお寺、仏像も壊されたわけですが

（なんと、運慶・快慶クラスの仏像もかなり壊され捨てられ、そして外国人に拾われて、結構、海外のプライベートコレクションとして今も存在しているらしいです。）、

でも、それでもどうして仏教は廃れなかったのか？

それは、お墓問題があったからだそうです。

弔いに関して、神道では一部な高貴な方々向けにしか儀式を行っておらず、死者が出た場合、穢れとして神社内にお墓を作ることもできない。

「じゃあ、どうするの？」

神社からも「お寺さんにお願いして」ということで、結局今まで通り、お寺で葬儀をしてもらってお墓を作るという形が今に続いているわけですね。

いやはや、面白い。

だから、日本では、お寺と神社が仲良く共存している姿が自然なのですね。

ご住職さまは、東北の復興支援についても積極的に携わっていらっしゃるのですが、

気仙沼の復興のお話は胸に刺さりました。

本当に必要かわからない高さ5mの防波堤の建設がずっと続いていたのだけど、それですら、最近工事をする重機が減り、その完成も遅れているそうです。

何故か? そう、東京オリンピックのため、重機が東京に集められているからだそうです。

なんなんだ！！

本当、ご住職さまがおっしゃる通り、役に立つかどうかわからない(そして今やいつ出来上がるのかわからない)防波堤にお金をかけるより、大きな仏像さまを建立した方が、ひとびとを癒すことになったかも知れませんよね。

At the last workshop of “A night of Buddha statues” this year, the Chief Priest Happiness Kansho started his story about his trip to Bhutan, a small country in the Himalayas and then the last workshop's topic; Buddhism statues in Tokyo, followed by his wrap-up of all the sessions.
FYI, we can meet marvelous Buddhism statues at Tokyo National Museum. 

The big anti-Buddhist movement “Haibutsu Kishaku” in Japan occurred at the beginning of the Meiji era by the government policy and so many temples and statues of Buddhist god/goodness were destroyed even the masterpieces of Unkei & Kaikei's.

Then, our question is why Buddhism is still alive in Japan after that?  That’s because we had “grave” issues which were critical in people’s living.

Shinto had only mourning ceremonies for special people only like the royal family in those days - the dead body was regarded as uncleanness in their sacred space; the shrine.

What they should do to hold a funeral?

Then Shinto priests told the people in trouble & sorrow to go to the “temple” for funerals and Shinto connived at Buddhism temples in a sense.  Then temples generally hold memorial services, funerals & graves still now.

It was very interesting story. 

That’s why we see shrines & temples built closely alone the streets and we Japanese perceive the scenery naturally.

The Chief Priest Happiness Kansho also told us about what’s going on in Kesennuma.

He also supports for the restoration of the Tohoku region after the 3.11 earnestly.  

The long breakwaters 5 meters high have been under construction along the seasides hit by the tsunami but the building time is delayed as some of heavy machinery disappeared.

Why? – They are in Tokyo now to build the facilities & infrastructure for the coming Olympics games…what a shame!

We are not sure whether 5 meters breakwater is actually desired by the local people and now nobody knows when it is completed.  

With that huge money, a great Buddha statue could have been built in that area and this might heal the people more, Chief Priest Happiness Kansho said.  

口ひげ月間 - Movember

去年知ったのだけど、MovemberとはMO（口ひげ）とNOVEMBER（11月）を掛け合わせた言葉で、“11月の間に髭を生やして、男性特有の病気に対する意識を高めていこう！” キャンペーンの名前。
募金活動も行われていて、鬱・前立腺癌の治療研究に役立てられているのです。

エイラ完結 - Earth's Children

ジーン・M・アウル著による30年にわたる物語「エイラ-地上の旅人」全第6部の完結章まで読み終わりました。

最初に読んだのは高校生の時？
充分感動したのだけれど、実はこの版は作者が意図に反して、
日本の青少年向けに内容が編集されたものでした。

遡ること35,000年前、新人クロマニオンの孤児の少女エイラが、じきに滅びゆくであろう、見た目も文化も大きく異なる旧人ネアンデルタールの部族の中で育つところから物語がスタート。
旧人の部族の中では蔑まれる存在のエイラ。狭量な権力者の悪意によって追放された後、自力で成長し、同じ人種の仲間達に出会い、家族を持ち、やがて大いなる存在になっていくという、とても壮大な物語。
冒険を重ねていく過程で、ライオン、馬、狼も彼女の大切な家族になっていくのも感動的。（ウルフがとても可愛いのだ。）

大人になってから図書館で原作に忠実に翻訳されたシリーズを見つけて読み始め、ついに今年最終章まで刊行されることに。

あまりに刊行される間隔が長いので、途中の話はところどころ忘れてしまったりしているのだけど、
物語全体に流れる人類の夜明けの時代の原始の強い伊吹を感じます。ずっしり読み応えのある物語です。
大好きな宇野亜喜良さんのイラストも物語に彩りを添えて本当に素敵。

I have finished reading all the volumes of "The Earth's Children" by Jean M. Auel.


I read "Ayla", first published in Japan after editing as a juvenile book when I was in high school and which was different from Jean Auel's intention as she wrote for adults.

I found the books translated from the originals faithfully in a library when I grew up. 
This magnificent novel; the series of Ayla's stories has been continued over 30 years and finally the concluding volume was published this year in Japan.

Well, some parts of the story were slipped away from my memories as the duration between the volumes are rather long, but it can't stop amazing and attracting me still now.
In the Japanese edition, my favorite illustrator, Akira Uno's drawings are so fabulous and make the books beautiful.

Among the animals of Ayla's friends, I like "Wolf" best.  

筋肉マウスと美味しいワイン - A Muscular Mouse & Delicious Wine

もうすぐ11月の会なのだけど、10月のサイエンスバーは、重鎮、北里大学名誉教授の花岡先生による「筋肉の再生について」。

筋幹細胞が分裂して筋繊維に向かっていく実際の動画も観られてとても面白かった。
ボディビルダー顔負けの筋肉むきむきのマウスの身体も忘れられない。。。

もうひとつ忘れられないのが、この日お勧めワイン。
私の好きなシラーでとても美味しかった！
もちろん、おかわり。

The November session is coming soon but let me write about the "Science bar" in October. 
It was about “Muscle regeneration” by Honorary Prof. Hanaoka of Kiatazato Univ.

It was fascinating to see a video clip of splitting muscle stem cells - what is called "satellite cell"s were increasing and growing into a myofiber for regenerating.
I’ll never forget the photo of a muscular mouse like a bodybuilder champion.

Also I cannot forget about that great organic red wine (Syrah is my favorite!) with rich aroma & taste.

お気に入りのカフェでフランス予習中 – Start preparation for my trip to France @ my favorite café

ご近所の素敵なカフェ。

たくさんの旅行関係の本・雑誌や、小説、絵本、画集達がお出迎え。 

チョイスが本当に私好みで、書斎風なインテリアも好感度高し。 

大好きな酒井駒子さんの画集を見ながら

飲んだカフェオレの中では最近一番の美味しさだったし、

栗のロールケーキも幸せな味だったな。 

来年、2年前にパリに渡った友人に会いに行くことを決めたので、

早速フランス関連のガイドブックやら特集雑誌を読みまくり。

2回目のフランスを満喫するために今からTo do listを作るのだ♥

念願のニースのマチス美術館にも絶対行きたい～

さて、そのパリ在住の友人は翻訳家になるために猛勉強中。

時として寝食を犠牲にしてストイックに勉強してきた

彼女の頑張りは、本当尊敬に値すると思う。

私はそんなに何かを頑張れるだろうか？と思ってしまう位。

（でも、何かを手にしたくて頑張りたくても、頑張ってはいけないことも、あったりする。）

日本では考えらない程厳しい環境の中、マスターコース卒業、

本当におめでとう！引き続き勉強中の彼女を熱く応援中。

So many guide books & magazines regarding travels are waiting for me @ a café in my neighborhood.  Their collection including art & picture books are really nice and I love the atmosphere & interior like a home library.

I enjoyed tasty café au lait & a chestnuts roll cake, looking at my favorite illustrator’s drawing book.

I decided to travel France next year to visit a Japanese friend who has been in Paris for 2 years now, studying to become a translator/interpreter.  This lovely plan made me start to collect information earnestly about France.  I’ll make “to do list” to enjoy my second visit to France.  I also want to visit the Matisse museum in Nice!

My friend is studying very hard, sometime she forgot sleeping & eating for heavy homework & severe examinations.  Her endeavor worth respecting and I don’t think I can do like that.

(Well, I am afraid I can’t do my best for something I should NOT do my best even if I want to try it…)

She finally made it! She has passed and graduated from the master’s course of a famous university this October at last. I am really really happy for her & very proud of her.

I am very much looking forward to her success in the future & next Skype time, usually we talk over 3 hours without knowing.

She has already started her activities as a translator.

皇居ランニング - Running around the Imperial Palace

神無月つごもり

男も女もすなる皇居ランニングといふものを、われもしてみむとてするなり。

意外や意外。これが思いのほか「いと、楽し」

同僚と話しながら、自分のペースで走ったのが良いのかも。

こんなに走ったの高校生以来ぶり。。。内もも痛し。

今週水曜日にも走ちゃった！

I did almost an hour's running around the Imperial Palace, recent popular activity in Tokyo, with my colleagues at the end of October.

It was a kind of challenge for me 'cause I had never run such a long distance but it was fun than imagined, enjoying conversation & night scenes.  But my thighs were sore right after that.

The runner's facility near the jogging course, Run Pit was too crowded.

Actually, I also ran this Wednesday.

都心の紅葉 - Autumnal tints in the central of Tokyo

11月5日現在の新宿の紅葉。

そして11月頭からオフィスビルに飾られたクリスマスツリー（のうちのひとつ）。気が早いですなぁ。
And one of Xmas trees appeared on our premises from November 1st.  We Japanese are so hasty about Xmas...

秋には芋ようかん - Imo-Yokan makes me feel autumn

創作和食系のお店でデザートメニューに「芋ようかん」発見。
熱い日本茶に芋ようかん♥と思っていたら、
出てきたのは、このプレート。あれ、あれ？
なのでコーヒーと一緒ににいただきました。

結論、やっぱり、シンプルに舟和の芋ようかんと番茶がベストマッチだな～

I chose "Imo-yokan, Yokan made from sweet potato paste only with a little sugar & salt" from the dessert menu at a modern casual Japanese restaurant with joy.   I had expected just a simple one, a combination of Imo-yokan & hot Japanese tea but this big plate was served in front of me.  I guess it was too much and I naturally chose coffee for this.

Imo-yokan of FUNAWA and Bancha; Japanese coarse tea, this is much the best.
